Explore our place within a living Earth through art, science and economics.
Barney Steel, Yadvinder Malhi and Kate Raworth
In conversation at the Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities
Our planet Earth is enveloped and shaped by a biosphere, the only living world we know. Humanity has emerged from this biosphere, yet our growing demands are now straining its intricate webs of life. This talk explores what the biosphere means to us as humans, and how we might learn to flourish with it.
Barney Steel, from the artist collective Marshmallow Laser Feast, explores how data, art and immersive experience can help us connect with the living world around us. Yadvinder Malhi, Professor of Ecosystem Science at the University of Oxford, considers the metabolism of the biosphere, and humanity’s own metabolism within it. Kate Raworth, author of Doughnut Economics, asks how we might rethink the economy as something embedded within, and dependent upon, the biosphere.
A journey through art, science and economics, exploring what it means to be human and to find our place and role within a living Earth.
